I will move to Gilbert AZ, I have one problem, Critters in homes ?

I’m from California. Okay, so we don’t get any Scorpions/Snakes/Tarantulas in our homes. That is why i am not used to them. My questions is. Any of you who live in the Phoenix area, have gotten Scorpions/tarantulas or snakes in your homes ? in suburbs like Scottsdale,Tempe,Gilbert,Chandler, Central Phoenix ???

I am really scared of things like that, but i have to move to AZ for 2 years.

Tarantulas and snakes really are not a concern. Lived here ten years, spent a ton of time in the desert, have never seen one outside of the zoo. Snakes are shy. They would really rather just be left alone. I am happy to oblige.

Scorpions are a different story. They are more concentrated in some areas than others. They tend to love orange groves, and I live right next a grove. Frankly, this year, we’ve been inundated. So frustrating. I hate them. We have an exterminator out monthly (which mainly kills the crickets – their favorite food) but with the extreme heat they have worked really hard to get inside. And have been unsettlingly successful. But if you move into a highly developed, slightly older area, there is less of a chance of bumping into one. My mom has lived in an older area of Tempe for twenty years and has never seen one, ever. We built our home right next to the groves – I’ve dealt with probably at least a dozen of them this summer.

But I know plenty of people who have lived here for years and have never seen them. I would say that the more developed the area, the less open space around the area, the less you are going to have to deal with scorpions.

Hello I am pretty much the opposite of you, just moved from gilbert az to california!
Ok there are scorpians and snakes, no tarantulas though…
The snakes should not be a problem unless you are moving way out in the middle of nowhere in queen creek to a ranch house, where it may even be rare to have one in your house.
As far as scorpions go it kinda depends. In my house we only saw 2 for the years that we lived there, but my friend who bordered a park had more.
Where you will find them the most is in the garage, but they are not common enough to make me even think twice about going in the garage.
There are also a lot of places that offer spraying to kill scorpions before they can get in.
To sum things up, scorpions are nasty little things, and arizona does have them, but they arn’t as common as people think. I lived there for years and only had a few scorpion encounters.
Enjoy your time in Arizona! It is really a great place to live!

You should be more concerned with the critters who have two legs. having lived in Phoenix for over two years I have personally never had a snake/scorpion encounter. I have had several encounters with the trailer trash, rednecks, wannabe gang punks and other assorted misfits that have overrun this city. if you are the type of guy who thinks a worthwhile weekend activity consists of standing in the front yard bare chested while sucking down a cold beer and flipping off passing motorists then you will be at home here. another favorite is to all pile in a car and drive like a maniac all over town while shouting out the car window at people and looking for fights. this city leads the nation (per capita) in road rage and traffic fatalities caused from red light runners. you literally take your life in your hands to drive through any intersection especially at night or during the weekend. if you removed all the trashy people from Phoenix you would be left with a city the size of flagstaff….good luck

Been in AZ all my life and have seen 1 scorpion and no snakes. Thats alive and in the wild anyways. Seen alot of taratulas but its usually after rain and in the street. Never around my home. I’d say the only thing ya gotta watch for is Black Widows. They are plentiful here but only outsdie around wood or the base of your home. Keep up on the pest control and you’ll have no problems.
